Chapter 9

Shane couldn’t believe it. He was actually nervous. As the host led GJ and Shane to their table, Shane glanced around at the others in the restaurant, positive they all watched them with judgmental gazes.

“Relax,” GJ whispered and took his hand.

“Here we are,” the host said and smiled as they took their seats. “Your meal is complimentary this evening.”

They both looked up at him and said in unison, “Huh?”

“The owners of Dixon’s want you to enjoy your evening. The executive chef has already picked out your entire meal, so please, sit back and relax. Your server will be with you shortly.”

Shane waited until the host left before grinning at GJ. “We’re being comped?”

“This is Boulder and Wind’s restaurant. I kind of figured they’d do something like this. Good thing, too. I don’t think I could even afford an appetizer at this place.”

“Hi there. My name is Sandy and I’ll be taking care of you this evening.” A perky blonde with a large smile walked up with a bottle of red wine. She uncorked it and poured each of them a glass. “Mr. Brown said to start you out with a nice woody pinot noir. He’s working on your appetizers now.”

“Can I ask what he’s planning to serve us?” Shane asked.

She grinned and shrugged a shoulder. “He told me it was a surprise. I love surprises, don’t you?”

Shane looked at GJ and definitely loved that heated, hungry look in those brown eyes. “I do.”

“Good surprises,” GJ amended.

Shane lost his smile as dark images of the past three months tried to snuff out the memory of his life at Dark Horse. This past week with GJ, he couldn’t remember ever laughing so much. He also couldn’t remember ever laughing with Gaia. At all. With her it was more of a love-hate relationship.

She loved to torture him, and he hated her for it.

Why did it take reuniting with GJ, falling in love with him all over again, to see the monster in Gaia that everybody else saw in her? Shane didn’t know if he’d ever be able to answer that question.

He decided at that moment it didn’t matter. He was here now, regardless of the reason, and didn’t want to be anywhere else but about to share a great meal with a great man.

“I’ll just go check on those appetizers. Enjoy your wine.”

Shane looked down at his wine and swirled it in his glass. He’d rather have GJ home, sitting on the couch and watching a White Collar marathon. He didn’t like dressing up and pretending to be someone he wasn’t.

The epiphany hit him so hard it physically slammed into him and he sucked in a breath. That was what Flood had been trying to tell him. Here he sat, trying to be the man GJ wanted him to be, or at least be the man he used to be, instead of being the man he wanted to be.

He didn’t want to pretend anymore.

Tonight marked the first day of the rest of his life.
